To Read or Not to Read?
I was searching the internet for something to correlate with Northanger Abbey and I realized that there are a lot, and I mean A LOT of articles related to reading. Whether it be literacy averages around the world, or ways to read faster, people have been consumed with reading. There are even reports out that you can buy as an e-book regarding reading, such as the one called To Read or Not to Read? like my title. Then I found the article on the Boston Globe titled, “Young People Reading a lot Less” by David Mehegan. In it, he states that with all the surrounding technology, our generation is not reading nearly enough anymore. In fact, almost half of Americans from 18-24 never read for pleasure. I found this article interesting because its sole purpose is to make people read more whereas in Austin’s time, reading was not something to be praised. I mean women reading was almost scandalous, especially the types of novels that Catherine would read. But in today’s society, it seems as if the world would be overjoyed if more students picked up even something as ridiculous as a Twilight novel. I like the contrast between these two worlds.
