I did the tattoo design project that requires us to a number of design principles into account. In the end, I created an occult-inspired design that displays the letters (in similar font to the original) “SPQR”, which refer to the Senate and the people of Rome, which is carved into every government building in Italy in decadent typeface. The runes between are letters from the Phoenician alphabet spelling the same, in a hand-drawn style. The letters are also known by the bacronym “The romans must be crazy” (“sono pazzi, questi Romani”). The design itself is attractive (to me at least) but this anti-authoritarian style double-meaning makes it much more interesting to me.

Book Cover Redesign, “King Rat”
I designed a book cover for James Clavell’s “King Rat”. The novel is about a black market salesmen in a prison camp during the Vietnam war, the envy of the camp. The rat placed upside-down works as an analogy to the constant efforts of the camp leaders and his fellow prisoners looking to knock him off of his “throne”. It was fairly challenging to condense the plot and action of an interesting novel into a simple logo and to fit that with text appropriately.
